The Car Keeper
Enhancing the Value of Your Vehicle
The minute a brand new vehicle is purchased it begins to depreciate in value. With maintenance, the value of the vehicle can be enhanced for years to follow. Taking care of a car is simple, and with advanced technology, the car basically cleans itself.
The best route to take is a ‘head to toe’ approach. Begin with the tires. Always check the alignment after about 6000 miles of mileage. With every gas fill-up, ensure the tire pressure is correct. One should also get a tire polish; this waxy solution when applied to tires not only gets the tire looking new but also gives it a protective UV shield. It can be used on all black trimmings and black bumpers.
Regularly wash and polish the car. A good polish can also provide a protective UV shield, remove imperfections and small scratches and prevent rust. Check the car for chips and gently sand the small chips and use touch-up paint to seal it.
Floor mats placed over the carpets, especially the right floor mat, can channel dust, water and sand from the drivers feet.
All cars need a good dashboard and windscreen cleaner. The right dashboard cleaner can protect the plastic dashboard from cracking due to daily exposure to the sun. This will enhance the life of the dashboard.
With a clean car comes a well-maintained engine. The owner must always ensure that all services are done and documented, and that water and oil is checked with every gas fill-up. On the market today are wonderful products to enhance the life of the engine, preventing corrosion and protecting the exposed components.
One must be careful when cleaning the car engine as there are different ways to safely clean engines depending on the age and type of car. This article will refer to the modern engine, which is in the front of the car. If the car has quite a bit of grime, it is best to clean it at a warmer temperature. Then remove loose twigs, sand and other debris with compressed air, or manually if there is no compressor.
Cover the distributor, carburetor and the air filter to protect from excess water. A plastic bag can be used. This includes any exposed electrical or computer components. Ensure the battery, fuse box and alternator are covered. Rinse the engine with a gentle spray loosening all dirt. The water does not need to be excessive if the wash is done frequently. Spray with a degreaser, gently brushing at any dirt. The car must then be rinsed. The engine must then be dried with an air compressor or leaf blower. Remove plastic protection and the car engine is clean.
Maintenance of the car not only keeps it in good condition, it also protects the vehicle for years to come, thus enhancing its value as it ages.
